Baku. Mahbuba Gasimbayli–APA. The Press Council has conducted six-month monitoring to clarify general tendencies, the Press Council Monitoring Group told APA.
The monitoring was conducted on the basis of “525-ci qezet”, “Azerbaijan”, “Yeni Musavat”, “Iki sahil”, “Baki xeber”, “Yeni Azerbaijan”, “Azadlig”, “Respublika”, “Impuls”, “Xalg qezeti”, “Ses”, “Exo”, “Sherg”, “Palitet”, “Zerkalo”, “Palitra”, “Express”, “Xalg Cebhesi”, “Edalet”, “Olaylar”, “Kaspi”, “Rating”, “Merkez”, “Xezer” newspapers. Publication of “Gun seher” newspaper was stopped, so it was not monitored.
The monitoring based on topics of materials, sources of information, classification of violation of rules of professional behaviors of Azerbaijani journalists. Developments in January-June influenced on topics of materials of monitored mass media. News on mass media especially differed among information. Increase of materials on economy, policy, sport, education, show-business, social linked with concrete occasions. Social and economic materials aimed to determine current prospects, influence of global price rises on life style of people, economy of the country. Number of materials on education in June extremely differed in comparison with previous months.
Increase of materials on show-business was linked with 2008 Eurovision Song Contest and Azerbaijan’s participation in it. Materials on military have been increased in comparison with previous months and it linked with parade on 90th anniversary of Azerbaijani Armed Forces in Azadlig Square. The Number of materials on military field was 1600 from January till June and it reached 5430 in June.
Totally 293890 materials were published in the first half of 2008 in the mass media, monitoring results showed. Most of them covered the social sphere.
160672 materials had informative character and most part of the news was produced by the local information agencies. It shows that issues have no enough potential to obtain news individually. As a result of monitoring it was clarified that relative news-carriers are not interested to give information to the mass media. They are indifferent to their duties to provide mass media with the information and it was reflected in the publications and it makes us to say that the existent situation turns into the negative tendency. The agency, which materials are used frequently, is APA. Newspapers show less interest to use material of each other or they add commentary or new, mostly contrary ideas to the materials obtained from the other newspapers. “525th gazette”, “Express” and “Sharg” lead for the news obtained from direct publications. “Iki Sahil”, “Khalg Cebhesi” and “Baku Khabar” were distinguished for the publications of news.
Reports of the government organizations and self-governing bodies were published in the newspapers for 40517 times in January. The mass media organizations received 28596 materials from the public and non-governmental organizations in the past six months. 19760 reports were obtained from the international news agencies and web-sites.
No quoting sources or quoting the unknown sources was characteristic for the local press. This method is not used frequently by the newspapers where the monitoring was conducted. 135 such facts were found in April. “Rating” was a leader among the newspapers quoting the unknown sources. There were disrespects to the professional principals in the critical materials.
Totally 1887 violations of Professional Behavior Rules of Journalists were identified. Article 1.2 of the First Principal (truth, accuracy and objectiveness) was violated frequently – for 624 times. Violation of professional principals has increased over the past two months generally.
