Views of Azerbaijani media representatives on the decisions of V Congress of journalists - UPDATED
Gulu Maharramli, who was against the amendments to the Press Council’s Statute and elected member of the Management Board, told APA that the congress was normal.
“The congress was held quietly, without problems… The certain goal was reached,†he said.
Former member of the Press Council’s Management Board, Chairman of Democratic Journalists’ League Yadigar Mammadli told APA that all spectra of the society had been represented in the Management Board up to now, but this time this principle was violated.
“The pro-opposition, pro-government, independent persons had been represented in the Management Board before. That’s why the Press Council had a prestige,†he said.
Yadigar Mammadli underlined that those who opposed were not elected to the Management Board and it would damage the image of the Press Council.
Editor-in-chief of “Yeni Musavat†newspaper, who missed the congress, told APA that the fifth Congress of Azerbaijani Journalists made the relations between the persons, who participated in the formation of the Press Council, more complicated.
“Independent media of Azerbaijan is at the competence of several persons. Restoration of relations among these persons is getting worse. I did not wish itâ€, he said. The editor-in-chief mentioned proposal on establishment of media structure in Azerbaijan and added that he would further intensify his activity in this direction. Asked why he does not participate in the congress, he answered that there was no need for it.
Rashad Majid, Editor-in-Chief of “525-ci qezet†member of Press Council Management Board estimated the establishment of alternative body as unserious matter.
“Press Council should become stronger. Conception on state support will be adopted and several authorities will be given to the Press Council. All these measures will strengthen the Press Council. Alternative body cannot live long with the support of foreign funds. It would be better if members of the Press Council Management Board are coordinated and solve the problem. The congress has adopted decisions and everybody should accept itâ€, he said.
Majid added that he did not receive remarks voiced on voting.
“Everything depended on outcomes of the voting. If there were secret voting, the results would not be changed. The attendees supported amendments to Statute unambiguouslyâ€, he said.
