State of Azeri media debated in US Congress Helsinki Commission

Chief of Helsinki Commission Alsee Hastings making a speech underlined that Russia is the most dangerous country for journalistic activity after Iraq and Algeria. The congressman said 14 journalists have been killed in Russia since 2000. The murders in some cases went to law-enforcement bodies, but investigation of local security agencies was inefficient.
Touching on the state of media in Azerbaijan Alsee Hastings said electronic media is under control and mentioned the events concerning ANS TV. The congressman said 7 journalists were arrested and 20 seek for asylum. It was also noted that censorship was abolished and newspaper registration was simplified in the country.

Russian journalist Fatma Tlisova, representative of the Committee to Protect Journalists Nina Ognianova, and official of Freedom House Paula Schifer participated in the debates on the state of media in OSCE area. /APA/
