Women Journalists Union presents awards on the World Press Freedom Day

Baku. Lachin Sultanova – APA. Azerbaijan Women Journalists Union held an event on May 3, the World Press Freedom Day declared by UN. Head of the Union Sevinj Osmangizi spoke about the development and prospects of Azerbaijani journalism, APA reports. The awards for “Loyalty to Journalism”, “Bravery in Journalism” and “Press Development Support” were presented at the event.
UN Representative in Azerbaijan Bruno Pueza spoke about the history of World Press Freedom Day and importance of the protection of rights of media representatives. “The number of assaulted journalists throughout the world reached shocking figures”, said Pueza. He said 11 journalists have been killed since the beginning of the year. “According to the last year reports, 125 journalists are in jail in the different countries, most of them are in China, Cuba and Eritrea”.
He said Azerbaijani press passed long way over the 15 years. Pueza specially emphasized the journalists’ activity during the tragic events at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy yesterday and said he ready to provide the Azerbaijani journalism with all assistances. OSCE Deputy Representative in Azerbaijan Alexis Shahtakhtinsky, ambassadors of Britain, Norway and France, as well as representative of the Office of the Council of Europe in Baku attended the ceremony.
