Judge of Baku Court of Grave Crimes Afgan Hajiyev will preside over the trial of Samir Saniyev and others. Preliminary hearing has been fixed for July 2.
Azerbaijan’s Ministry of National Security held counter-terrorism operation on the eve of Eurovision song contest last year. Public Affairs Center of the Ministry said an armed group led by Vugar Padarov that planned provocative actions and terrorist attacks in Azerbaijan with the view of disrupting socio-political stability had been rendered harmless. Vugar Padarov was killed, most members of the armed group were disarmed and arrested.
22 more members of the group were detained as a result of the counter-terrorism operation, which was continued for rendering harmless other members of the armed group, thwart other illegal actions planned by them. As a result of the counter-terrorism operation carried out in Nizami district, Baku on May 16, 2012, one of the members of the armed group, citizen of Azerbaijan Huseynov Timur Ruslan fired ignoring the special task forces’ warning to surrender. Timur Huseynov, who showed armed resistance, was killed.
One of the gang leaders Saniyev Samir “Abu Ubeyda” Fakhraddin, who was given the same power with Vugar Padarov for committing terror acts and appointed “amir”, could escape during the operation. Saniyev was detained by Gazakh region’s police officers while attempting to leave Azerbaijan. He showed armed resistance and injured a police officer with a pistol. Saniyev was disarmed, 1 “Stechkin” pistol, 40 cartridges and 2 chargers were seized from him.
It was found out that Padarov and members of armed gang, which was led by him, planned to commit terrorist attack against the Azerbaijani President during his visit to the north-west region of the country in April last year, as well as to attack the law-enforcement bodies, kill the employees of these structures and seize the ammunitions in the administrative buildings, explode several sanctuaries, mosques and the shrines belonging to the other religious confessions.
Saniyev and his armed gang also planned to commit explosions in the places populated most of all by the foreigners, including Hilton Baku and JW Marriot Hotel Absheron and other hotels, as well as in Baku Crystal Hall and State Flag Square by acquiring the tickets for the Eurovision-2012 Song Contest.
40 members of the armed group have been arrested so far, 13 submachine guns, a “RPK” machinegun, different types of pistols, 3 carbines, 3424 types of various caliber cartridges, 66 charges for machinegun and pistol, 23 “RGD-5”, 26 “F-1” and 3 “RG-42” hand grenades, a lot of detonators, book propagandizing terrorism and jihad were seized from them.
The criminal case on 40 detainees has been divided into several groups. A group of them have been sentenced, the others are currently standing trial.
