 National Security Ministry issues statement on arms smuggling by Parviz Hashimli from Iran to Azerbaijan  - <span style="color: red;">UPDATED

The Ministry’s Public Relations Center told APA that as a result of the operations conducted basing on the information received by the National Security Ministry, smuggling of large arms and ammunition from Iran to Azerbaijan has been prevented.


On September 17, 2013, Azerbaijani citizens Hashimli Parviz Kamran, who was born in Zar village of Kalbajar region, has temporary registration in Kalbajar headquarters of Gulustan settlement in Nizami district of Ganja city and is actually living in Binagadi district of Baku and Gurbanov Tavakkul Zakariyya, who has been registered at D. Bunyazadeh street (apartment 120) in Nizami district of Ganja city and is actually living in Nasimi district of Baku were arrested as suspects.


The Ministry’s Investigation Department has launched a criminal case under Criminal Code’s articles #206.3.2 (smuggling of firearms by an organized group) and 228.2.1 (obtaining, storing, carrying firearms, their spare parts). Hashimli and Gurbanov have been brought to responsibility and sentenced to pretrial detention under the court decision.


It was found out that Parviz Hashimli, Tavakkul Gurbanov, persons called Rza and Huseyn, the citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran, smuggled firearms from Iran to Azerbaijan, illegally carried and stored them. Parviz Hashimli, Tavakkul Gurbanov agreed with Rza that the latter would illegally obtain firearms in Iran with the purpose of sale.


The other Iranian citizen Huseyn smuggled firearms and ammunition from Iran to Azerbaijan on September 17, 2013 under instructions of Rza and handed them over to Tavakkul Gurbanov 14 km from Bilasuvar city. In return, Tavakkul Gurbanov gave $ 12 000 of $15 000 that he received from Parviz Hashimli to Iranian citizen Huseyn and took the rest $ 3000 himself for the service according to the agreement.


Tavakkul Gurbanov took the firearms and ammunition to Baku in his Volkswagen Caddy. As a result of complex operations carried out by the employees of the Ministry of National Security, Volkswagen Caddy driven by Tavakkul Gurbanov and Parviz Hashimli was detained on September 17, 2013.


In accordance with the requirements of the criminal procedural legislation, the car was inspected in the presence of witnesses and Parviz Hashimli and Tavakkul Gurbanov. 6 Makarov pistols, 6 cartridge clips for Makarov pistol and 40 cartridges were found in the car and seized. $2800 of $3000 given by Parviz Hashimov to Tavakkul Gurbanov was also seized as material evidence.


Investigation is underway to determine other participants of the illegal actions.
