Human right activist: â€œ5 people died as a result of torture in Azerbaijan in the first half of this yearâ€

Baku. Hafiz Heydarov â€“ APA. The Azerbaijan Anti-Torture Committee publicizes the report on first half of 2011. Head of the Organization Elchin Behbudov told APA that 89 appeals on torture and inhuman treatment entered to the committee during 6 months of this year. Underlining the increase of number of appeals in comparison with the corresponding period of the last year, the committee chairman said that the majority of entered calls are related to the inhuman treatment with prisoners and the accused during the preliminary investigation.

The committee chairman also noted that 5 people died in Azerbaijan as a result of torture during the 6 months of this year. Among the dead persons there were those who committed suicide.

Behbudov underlined that this reports was elaborated on the basis of appeals entered to the committee and the official organizations were informed on all these facts. He also noted that his organization would render a report to the UN Anti-Torture Committee in 2013.
