Deputy Minister: “New detention facility to be opened in Azerbaijan next year”

Baku. Ramil Mammadli - APA. Mixed-regime detention facility in Shaki is considered to open in 2011, Deputy Justice Minister, Chief of Penitentiary Services Nazim Alakbarov, APA reports. Speaking about construction of new detention facility under Baku Detention Facility for women, as well as juniors, Alakbarov said that it would not be possible to open those facilities next year.

He spoke about measures done in 2010 connected with improvement of detention conditions of prisoners and organization of their spare time. Alakbarov noted that books of prisoners were being published, different sport competitions were organized between them, as well as spectacles were being prepared by the participation of Women’s Detention Facility #4 together with Academic National Drama Theatre.

Alakbarov added that the International Red Cross Organization (ICRC) would withdraw from the project considering treatment of tubercular patients. To him, the ICRC had announced that it would withdraw from this project in 2011: “They base this decision that material and technical base of the reatment Institution of Penitentiary Services met the modern standards and that is why, we must engage in cure of tubercular patients ourselves”.
