Maia Panjikidze said that there is a great interest in this railway: “In his speech, Turkish Foreign Minister also stressed it. When the withdrawal of the military forces and cargos from Afghanistan starts after 2014, this will be the shortest and the most convenient road. Therefore, the meeting welcomed the proposal. I believe that this proposal is acceptable by NATO.”
Formerly, the Azerbaijani officials also brought this issue to agenda. Head of Azerbaijan’s permanent mission to NATO Khazar Ibrahim said that they are ready to cooperate with NATO in withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. According to him, official representatives of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey have presented the technical and procedural details of using Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway in this regard.
The railway line is expected to be commissioned by the end of this year.
