A high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly dedicated to the midterm review of the implementation of the New Urban Agenda was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the State Committee told APA-Economics.
Chairman of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture Anar Guliyev delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the meeting and later presented the national statement of the Republic of Azerbaijan during the plenary session.
According to the Committee, Anar Guliyev stressed in his opening remarks that the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), held in Baku in May this year, gave new momentum to the advancement of the global urban agenda and marked an important milestone leading up to today's high-level meeting.
"The journey that began in Quito gave us a shared vision. Baku provided a new political impetus to the global agenda. Let New York become the place where we reaffirm our collective will to accelerate the implementation of the New Urban Agenda," Anar Guliyev said.
In this context, Anar Guliyev drew attention to the reconstruction process in Karabakh and East Zangezur, noting that these territories are being rebuilt under the "Great Return" State Program based on the "Build Back Better" principle and modern master plans.
"This approach carries broader significance in the post-conflict recovery period and demonstrates that urban planning serves to ensure long-term peace, sustainable development, and a high quality of life," he said.
The Committee Chairman also spoke about the urban planning reforms being implemented in the country. It was noted that the relevant legal and regulatory framework has been consistently improved in recent years, and updated master plans have been prepared for more than 86% of the country's cities.
It was particularly emphasized that, within the framework of cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the country's first National Urban Policy is being developed.
In conclusion, it was noted that Azerbaijan remains committed not only to continuing its national efforts to implement the New Urban Agenda but also to contributing to the expansion of international cooperation in the field of sustainable urban development.
