APA’s Georgia bureau reports that the seminar is being attended by Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, Speaker of the Parliament David Usupashvili, the representatives of NATO member states and MPs from Azerbaijan Malahat Ibrahimgizi and Gudrat Hasanguliyev.
Addressing the event, Ivanishvili said that at present, the South Caucasus needs more the support of the international community, because no prospect is seen for the settlement of the conflicts: “Unfortunately, there is still a threat of outbreak of conflicts in our region. The region is one of the complicated zones of the process of post-Soviet transformation. Today, the South Caucasus needs more the support of the international community and their involvement in the region.”
According to Ivanishvili, the mechanisms for the settlement of conflicts have not been produced results yet: “20 percent of the Georgian territories have been occupied. Following the ethnic cleansing in Abkhazia in 90s, a terrible crime was again committed against the Georgian population in 2008. ”
NATO South Caucasus expert Thomas de Waal delivered a lecture entitled “Security issues for peace in the Caucasus”. Following the lecture, the discussion was held on this issue. Member of the Azerbaijani delegation Gudrat Hasanguliyev didn’t agree with some points in Waal’s speech: “You named Armenia as a player in the region. However, this country is the outpost of Russia. Russia is forcibly trying to make Azerbaijan member of customs union and Eurasia Union.”
Thomas de Waal commented on this: “It is right, I also consider that Armenia depends on Russia in terms of economy. But Armenia is not Russia.”
The seminar will last by May 1.
