The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yalchin Rafiyev has stated that Azerbaijan supports reforms in the UN Security Council, APA reports.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Yalchin Rafiyev said during a discussion themed "The Rise of the Global South and the West: Azerbaijan's Role, Cooperation, and New Opportunities for Development" at a wide-ranging meeting of the Committee for International Relations and Interparliamentary Connections of Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament) that fair representation must be ensured within the UN Security Council, as a body responsible for ensuring international peace and security in the world.
The Deputy Minister noted that in the ongoing discussions about reforms within the UN, the Global South holds a particularly strong position: "For example, African countries are fighting for two permanent seats in the UN Security Council, voiced such a strong stance. Even in one of his speeches, President Ilham Aliyev raised the issue of ensuring permanent membership seats for the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation countries in the UN Security Council. All of these are steps that could ensure fair representation within the UN Security Council as an effective body to ensure international peace and security."
