Repeated anti-Russian and Russophobic statements were the reason for denying Azerbaijani MP Azer Badamov entry to Russia, a source told TASS, APA reports.

According to the official, Badamov, a member of the Milli Majlis (parliament) of Azerbaijan, was not allowed to enter Russia on May 4, 2025. "Azer Badamov was not allowed to enter Russia in accordance with articles 26 and 27 of the federal law on the rules of leaving and entering Russia. The grounds for the decision were repeated anti-Russian and Russophobic statements."

He pointed out that the measures against Badamov are "personal" and do not affect "Russia’s unwavering commitment to the development of Russian-Azerbaijani relations in the spirit of strategic partnership and alliance".

"Russia is not a supporter of the practice of stop-lists in relations with friendly countries. As is known, a ban on entry to Azerbaijan was previously imposed on a number of Russian lawmakers. The latest such case concerns State Duma member Nikolay Valuyev. Moscow considers it right to settle such issues through diplomatic channels rather than by expressing claims through the mass media," the source said.

Reaction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan

Such actions by Moscow raise legitimate questions on the Azerbaijani side.

On the day the incident occurred, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan commented on the issue, noting that contact was immediately established with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs via our embassy in Russia. A representative of the Russian MFA stated that the matter would be investigated but did not provide any explanation for the reasons behind this decision.

“We consider this decision by the Russian side to be an unfriendly step and expect a solid explanation from Russia regarding the matter,” said Aykhan Hajizada, spokesperson for the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Russia’s leaking of information to the media based on an unnamed source in response should be regarded as yet another incomprehensible action by Moscow.

In general, we have repeatedly witnessed biased and prejudiced positions against Azerbaijan by both Russian officials, various experts, and the media. The statements made by Valuyev against Azerbaijan are enough to recall. Can the Russian side point to any anti-Russian or Russophobic remarks made by Azar Badamov? No, because such remarks do not exist. Azar Badamov, along with other Azerbaijani individuals, may only have responded to the biased statements made by Valuyev, Zatulin, and others — nothing more. And this is natural. Biased attitudes against Azerbaijan must, of course, be met with a response. If the Russian side does not want to hear what it perceives as biased or Russophobic remarks, it must first teach its own politicians and deputies to behave objectively and respectfully toward Azerbaijan.

Deportation of MP Azar Badamov

APA reported yesterday that Azerbaijani MP Azer Badamov was detained at a Moscow airport and subsequently deported.

Badamov was traveling to Russia’s Astrakhan region as part of an Azerbaijani delegation invited by the Russian side and organized by the Absheron District Executive Authority. The delegation was set to attend events marking the birthday anniversary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev. However, Badamov was stopped at the Moscow airport and denied boarding the flight to Astrakhan. He was informed that he was banned from entering the country.

It is presumed that Badamov was placed on a blacklist by Russian authorities following his media statements criticizing Russian MP Valuyev, who had made remarks offensive to the Azerbaijani people and state.
