Azerbaijani and Russian foreign ministers issue joint statement on 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations - PHOTOSESSION
Following the meeting, the ministers held a briefing for the journalists. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said that Azerbaijan and Russia signed 165 agreements, including 80 inter-state and intergovernmental agreements, within 20 years. Minister expressed gratitude to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for his initiatives for the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. “Unfortunately we have not achieved it yet, but I hope we will achieve the settlement of the problem and move the situation from the point of status quoâ€.
The issues related to the Caspian legal status, development of trade and relations with the federal centers, as well as the issues of humanitarian cooperation were discussed at the meeting. The ministers also considered the issue of opening the Azerbaijan Culture Center in Moscow.
Sergei Lavrov said that Russia was ready to continue developing partnership with Azerbaijan: “During previous years we proved that we were able to develop dialogue, which causes mutual interest, to find solution of complex problems, including state border problemâ€. Lavrov noted that Russia’s 70 regions cooperated with Azerbaijan: “It is a good basis for developing traditional and cultural relations between the peopleâ€.
Lavrov touched upon the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and said that Russia was interested in the soonest settlement of this problem: “The decision must be acceptable for all sides. Russia continues its mediation mission on the settlement of this conflictâ€.
Ministers also presented the collection of documents signed between Azerbaijan and Russia in 1992-2012.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is on two-day visit to Azerbaijan on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The visit will finish tomorrow.
