The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, held a telephone conversation with the President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, according to a tweet from the EU Commission President, APA reports.
"These are very difficult times for the Palestinian people who have been betrayed by Hamas, I told President Abbas on the phone. I conveyed to him and to the families of those who have lost innocent lives my deepest condolences. I made clear that, in its legitimate efforts to fight Hamas terrorists, Israel must seek to protect civilian lives and respect international humanitarian law. The EU is working with partners to attend to the humanitarian needs of vulnerable Palestinians. It is vital to prevent broader regional escalation and spill-over. The EU Commission will support all efforts to find a lasting solution towards peace, based on a two-state solution," she said.
