Jaap de Hoop Scheffer: Candidates for NATO membership should clearly fulfil political and military commitments

Brussels. Alexander Kin - APA. NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer told Ukraine and Georgia that NATO membership is not only a privilege but also a number of commitments.
As the APA correspondent in Brussels reports, he said at the opening of the ministerial meeting of the North Atlantic Alliance.
He said that membership in NATO in any case requires not only privilege but also a serious commitment.
In particular, candidates must demonstrate a clear commitment to political and military fields, added Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.
He noted that the Foreign Ministers of member countries should undertake the first assessment of readiness of Georgia and Ukraine to get Membership Action Plans (MAPs).
He also recalled that the meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Committee, as well as the first meeting of Georgia-NATO Foreign Ministers will take place on Dec. 3.
