Ferry sinks in Turkey: one dead and 34 missing

Ankara–APA. A ferry sank near Bandirma port of Turkey’s Balikesir province. 118 m-length roll-on-roll-off ferry “Hayat N” went down in the sea shortly after leaving Bandirma for Istanbul at 23.30 by local time on September 14. The ferry with more than 100 passengers was loaded with 73 trucks and two cars. According to preliminary reports, the cause of the sinking related to the ferry’s overloading. First of all, port workers and fishing boats around came to the rescue. Then coastal guard’s motor boats and rescuers joined them. Many people reached the ground by swimming. Balikesir’s Governor Salih Keser said 67 people were rescued and 34 were still missing. One dead was officially reported. The rescue operations are continued.
