Construction work on the first unit of Türkiye’s “Akkuyu” Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has been 95% completed, said the country’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, APA-Economics reports, citing TASS.

“As for the launch of the first reactor, we are at a very important stage. 95% of the work has been completed, and next year we hope to start the production of the first electricity at Akkuyu. That is our goal. Of course, after the first reactor, others will follow, but for now, we are focusing on completing the construction of Türkiye’s first nuclear reactor,” the minister said.

He called the project one of the largest in Türkiye and the world: “The Akkuyu NPP project is the largest foreign investment project in Türkiye. Currently, the construction of four reactors is underway at the world’s largest nuclear power plant construction site. In the past one to two years, we have faced certain difficulties in implementing the project. I am referring to the pandemic, the Russia–Ukraine war, some direct or indirect obstacles, and sanctions. Some manufacturers did not supply components to Türkiye for political reasons, which, of course, affected the implementation of the project.”

Alparslan Bayraktar added that most of the equipment required for Akkuyu has already been brought to Türkiye, and some sets are on the way from China.

“The equipment is already at the Akkuyu site, while some sets are still coming from China. Rosatom found replacements for the [undelivered] equipment, and their order was placed in China about a year and a half ago. I believe that most of this equipment has already arrived, but some sets are still on the way,” the minister emphasized.

It should be noted that Akkuyu is the first nuclear power plant being built in Türkiye. The project is being implemented based on the intergovernmental cooperation agreement signed between the Russian Federation and Türkiye in May 2010. The project is being executed by Russia’s state atomic energy corporation, Rosatom.
