"We should focus on the water on Earth, not on Mars or the Moon," said the EU Special Envoy on Climate and Environment, Antony Agota, during at the High-Level Launch Event “Celebrating Water’s Lifeline for Climate, Nature, and People” event at COP29, APA reports.

He emphasized that the European Union's 2050 targets and the Baku Declaration acknowledge that water lies at the heart of climate change, highlighting that most of the impacts of climate change stem from disruptions in the water cycle. Furthermore, the declaration takes into account the significant majority of natural disasters and emergencies linked to water. The Declaration underscores the important role of protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing water basins and water-related ecosystems, which provide benefits in terms of both climate mitigation and adaptation.

"The European Union acknowledges that no one can do this alone, and as the COP29 Presidency, we must bring governments, UN organizations, academia, and the private sector together to work collectively on water and climate change," added the Special Envoy.
