The next stage of Azerbaijan's regional energy transition is based on using the huge potential of the Caspian Sea and creating green energy corridors connecting the South Caucasus, Central Asia, Türkiye, and Europe through our country, said Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov during his speech on the second day of the 2nd Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW), APA-Economics reports.
According to him, measurement and monitoring measures are currently being carried out to assess the development of wind energy farms in the Caspian Sea, and cooperation is being carried out with a number of international companies.
"By 2032, we plan to commission 6 GW of onshore and offshore renewable energy capacity. 4 GW of this will be exported through the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe green energy corridor within the framework of a phased plan. This is equivalent to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 4.5 million tons," the minister noted.
Parviz Shahbazov added that the implementation of the Trans-Caspian Green Energy Corridor, as well as the "Azerbaijan-Türkiye-Europe" green energy corridor passing through the Nakhchivan region of Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the "Azerbaijan-Georgia-Türkiye-Bulgaria" corridor, remain among our top priorities. These large-scale projects will balance regional networks, increase the share of renewable energy, strengthen energy security, reduce emissions, and strengthen Azerbaijan's position as a country contributing to climate action in the wider region.
Another key energy source for a zero-emission future is hydrogen, the minister says, noting that Azerbaijan is preparing an action plan to implement the National Strategic Vision covering hydrogen production, consumption, and export. He emphasized that Azerbaijan remains committed to the green energy transition and is taking consistent steps in this direction.
