“Ensuring families’ right to learn the fate of their loved ones, sharing reliable information, strengthening scientific capacity, and maintaining the continuity of humanitarian cooperation are interconnected priorities for our future activities,” Secretary of the State Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons Gazanfar Ahmadov said at the 4th International Conference within the framework of the Baku Dialogue on Missing Persons, APA reports.
He said that trust, which is the main theme of the conference, is strengthened precisely through concrete steps taken in these areas: “Accurate information opens the way for searches. Coordinated work accelerates identification. Every fate that is clarified helps put an end to years of uncertainty for a family.”
The secretary of the State Commission noted that for Azerbaijan, it is of particular importance that Armenia provide accurate and detailed information about the fate of missing Azerbaijanis and their burial places.
According to him, taking all possible measures to clarify the fate of persons missing as a result of armed conflict and providing families with available information are obligations under international humanitarian law: “For Azerbaijan, it is of particular importance that Armenia provide accurate and detailed information about the fate of missing Azerbaijanis and their burial places. Practical cooperation in this area can help alleviate the suffering of families and strengthen the trust necessary for lasting peace.
Scientific and technical cooperation should also be continued. Exchange of experience, joint research, forensic expertise, genetics, and the training of specialists in modern search technologies will help turn the knowledge we have gained into practical results. Continuous contacts between state institutions, international organizations, and experts are of great importance for this cooperation.”
