Azerbaijan discussed  co-op opportunities with World Bank on “Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor” project

Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov met with Charles Cormier, Infrastructure Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, as well as Rolande Pryce, Regional Director for the South Caucasus at the World Bank, the Ministry told APA-Economics.

During the meeting, an exchange of views was held on the current projects being implemented in Azerbaijan’s energy sector and new cooperation opportunities, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy network modernization, energy storage systems, rooftop solar energy, and regional energy projects. The progress of the AZURE project implemented jointly with the World Bank was discussed, and the importance of the project in terms of the sustainable integration of renewable energy capacities into the power grid was highlighted. Amid demand coming from data centers and artificial intelligence, as well as the increase in electric vehicles, the importance of modernizing, digitizing, and increasing the reliability of electricity transmission and distribution networks was noted. 

Opportunities for cooperation with the World Bank on the "Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor" project were also discussed. The interconnection between the “Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor” and the “Georgia-Romania Black Sea Submarine Cable” projects, the contribution of these initiatives to Europe’s energy security, and their role in regional integration were also reviewed. The prospects for expanding Azerbaijan’s role as a regional energy supplier, not only in terms of electricity but also gas exports, were touched upon.

The meeting also addressed the work carried out in the field of energy efficiency and future steps in this direction. The existing potential for reducing energy consumption in public buildings, the activities of the Energy Efficiency Fund, and the possibilities of applying international experience were discussed. It was considered appropriate to continue technical assistance and knowledge exchange in this area.
