OSCE ODIHR Needs Assessment Mission issues a report on Azerbaijan

The visit aims to assess preparation for presidential elections in Azerbaijan.
The report covers that Azerbaijani Government announced its readiness to hold elections met international norms and would invite OSCE ODIHR Needs Assessment Mission.
“Several candidates have been already nominated and several opposition leaders initiate to boycott the elections. Several local observers think that it is unimportant to send foreign mission to Azerbaijan for observation of the elections,” the report says. The report envisages that though Election Code has been amended there are several problems. Authors of report noted that law on freedom of assembly had been approved recently, but several bodies in Azerbaijan supposed for implementation of the law. The report also says that the main problem is a foreign interference into elections and official state bodies promised that they would prevent it. OSCE ODIHR Needs Assessment Missions recommended sending 30-member long term and 450-member short term missions to Azerbaijan on presidential elections.
