The European Commission has rejected a US proposal to resume gas purchases from Russia as part of discussions on a ceasefire in Ukraine and confirmed that it does not intend to lift any sanctions against Russia until the conflict is completely over, European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho stated at a briefing in Brussels, APA reports.
"Our position remains unchanged. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has previously made it clear that she will not lift any restrictions against Russia until the war is completely over," Paula Pinho said.
She recalled that disappointment was expressed at the EU summit held on October 15-16 over the US decision to ease restrictions against Russia and begin purchasing Russian diesel fuel.
Paula Pinho also reiterated that the European Commission believes coordinated sanctions against Russia by the EU and the US are necessary. According to her, such sanctions could persuade Russia to agree to halt military operations on Kyiv's terms.
