Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has met his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Tehran, to discuss the war with the United States and efforts to end it, Al Jazeera reports.
Lavrov landed in the Iranian capital on Monday afternoon on his first visit to Iran since February 2025. Araghchi said talks with Lavrov had focused on regional developments, including the US-Israeli war on Iran.
“Regarding the Gulf and West Asia, we have had talks, and also on Ukraine and the Iranian-American negotiations,” Araghchi said in a press briefing.
He also called out Israel’s “dangerous expansion” in the region, which he blamed for the current hostilities.
“The lack of security in the Gulf and in the Strait of Hormuz … this is due to the Israeli-American aggression,” he said.
Lavrov said Russia is committed to a 20-year strategic partnership agreement with Iran, which officially came into force on October 2, 2026.
He is scheduled to hold talks with President Masoud Pezeshkian later on Monday.
Moscow said the trip was part of efforts to ease months of tension, since the US and Israel launched their war on Iran on February 28.
