The 52nd session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was held on October 17-18 in Baghdad, the capital of the Republic of Iraq, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA.
Azerbaijan was represented at the session by a delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev.
During the event, discussions were held on pressing issues on the agenda of OIC member states, regional and international challenges, recent developments and significant events within the OIC, as well as expanding cooperation among member states and improving the effectiveness of the organization's activities.
Speeches were delivered during the main plenary meeting and a special session dedicated to the theme "Dialogue and Solidarity in Promoting Peace and Sustainable Development – Two Main Pillars."
In his speeches, Yalchin Rafiyev expressed concern over military confrontations and rising tensions in the region, as well as the growing trend of Islamophobia worldwide. He also addressed the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the Palestinian issue, and the priorities of Azerbaijan's upcoming chairmanship of the OIC Summit.
At the conclusion of the session, resolutions covering political, economic, humanitarian, cultural and several other areas, as well as the Baghdad Declaration, were adopted.
One of the main significant outcomes of the session for Azerbaijan was the readoption by the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers of four resolutions traditionally adopted concerning Azerbaijan, with relevant updates reflected in their texts.
These resolutions are titled "Elimination of the Consequences of the Aggression of the Republic of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan," "Economic Assistance to the Republic of Azerbaijan," "Destruction and Desecration of Islamic Historical and Cultural Monuments and Traces in the Territories of Azerbaijan as a Result of the Aggression of the Republic of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan," and "Solidarity with the Victims of the 1992 Khojaly Massacre."
Another important outcome was the inclusion of a provision concerning the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process in the Baghdad Declaration.
The Baghdad Declaration welcomes progress in the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process, particularly the initialing of the Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the two states. On behalf of OIC member states, it calls on Armenia to remove the remaining legal and political obstacles to signing the peace agreement.
The declaration also expresses solidarity with the Government and people of the Republic of Azerbaijan in their efforts to restore and reconstruct the liberated territories and calls on OIC member states to actively support demining activities in those territories.
In addition, following a vote held during the session, Azerbaijan's representative Aydin Safikhanli was elected as a member of the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission for 2027–2030.
On the sidelines of the event, Yalchin Rafiyev held bilateral meetings with Gambian Foreign Minister Sering Modou Njie, Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Musa Kulaklıkaya, and Iraqi Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom.
The meetings focused on cooperation with these countries within the framework of the OIC.
