Germany summoned Iran’s ambassador on Monday, accusing Tehran of planning assassination attempts against pro-Israel figures and condemning the alleged plots in the strongest possible terms, Anadolu Agency reports.
"We do not tolerate attacks on Jewish life and on those who defend it—anywhere, and certainly not in Germany," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on social media, adding that the ambassador was summoned to the ministry on Monday.
Berlin said it is taking active steps to counter such threats, and noted that it had previously pushed successfully for "the masterminds of Iranian assassination attempts worldwide" and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to be placed on the EU terror list.
The summons followed last week's sentencing by a Hamburg court of two men in connection with alleged plots targeting Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and Volker Beck, president of the German-Israeli Society.
The court imposed an 8.5-year prison term on a Danish national identified as Ali Hassan S. and a 4.5-year sentence on an Afghan accomplice, Tawab M.
