The head of the Azerbaijani diaspora in the Urals, Shahin Shikhlinski, has been found guilty of organizing a murder and an attempted assassination in Yekaterinburg, APA’s Russia bureau reports, citing local media.
A jury panel found the leader of the Azerbaijani diaspora in the Urals, Shahin Shikhlinski, as well as Ayaz, Bakir, Kamal and Mazahir Safarov, and Shujayaddin Rajabov, guilty of organizing a murder and an attempted assassination in Yekaterinburg.
The investigation believes that they were involved in the murder of businessman Yunus Pashayev in 2001 and in an attempted assassination of businessman Fehruz Shirinov in 2010.
Note that the jury trial was held behind closed doors at the request of the prosecution. It was reported that the sentence will be announced soon.
According to the verdict delivered by the jury panel, Shahin Shikhlinski was found guilty of participating in the attempted assassination of Fehruz Shirinov in 2010.
The Safarov brothers were also found guilty on all charges of murder and attempted premeditated killing (the murder of businessman Yunus Pashayev and the attempted assassination of Fehruz Shirinov).
The judge must now pass sentence based on the jury’s verdict.
Background of the case
In June last year, Russian law enforcement agencies carried out an operation targeting Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg. Force was used during the operation, resulting in the deaths of two Azerbaijani brothers, Ziyaddin and Huseyn Safarov. Other members of the Safarov family and several compatriots were arrested by court order. They were charged with crimes committed in 2001, 2010 and 2011. Later, the head of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Yekaterinburg, Shahin Shikhlinski, and his son Mutvali Shikhlinski were detained. Criminal proceedings were initiated against Mutvali Shikhlinski on charges of using violence against a government official. Shahin Shikhlinski, in turn, is charged with attempted contract killing and using violence against a government official.
