The Middle Corridor should not merely be infrastructure that transports cargo from point A to point B, Balázs Hendrich, Head of the Representation Office of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) in Hungary, said at the 2nd International Conference of Leading National Think Tanks of Turkic States, jointly organized by the Center for Analysis of Economic Reforms and Communication and the OTS, APA reports.

He stated that the Middle Corridor should also serve as a hub connecting economies and areas of economic activity along the route.

According to Hendrich, particular attention is being paid to simplifying and harmonizing customs and transit procedures among OTS member states to achieve this goal.

“The main objectives here are to facilitate border crossings, ensure interregional connectivity, and implement well-developed and interconnected physical and digital transport infrastructure projects,” he said.

He emphasized that differences in procedures, documentation requirements, border controls, transit duties, and other fees across countries prolong transportation times and make it difficult for businesses to use the Middle Corridor.

Balázs Hendrich noted that eliminating such obstacles is one of the main priorities within the OTS and that several national institutions are working in this direction under the organization's coordination.

According to the OTS official, the organization is working to increase efficiency and reduce barriers by simplifying and harmonizing customs procedures.

“In this regard, the OTS Simplified Customs Corridor has been established to ensure effective control of goods and reduce transportation times and documentation requirements,” he said.

He added that this process would also accelerate digitalization. Digitalization is one of the OTS's key initiatives and could facilitate the development of e-commerce, the diversification of supply chains, and more efficient use of the Middle Corridor's global potential.
