Dow and S&P 500 slip while Nasdaq up
European shares mostly advanced on Wednesday as investors anticipated futher interest rate cuts in the US and Europe. Fears of a recession were put to the side as investors sought bargains, particularly in the financial sector.
The FTSE 100 jumped 316.16 or 8.05 per cent at 4,242.54. The index was up 9.3 per cent for the week, but still down 13 per cent for the month.

Japanese stocks surged yesterday, adding 7.7 per cent. Exporters were the leaders as a weaker yen and anticipation of a rate cut from the US and the Bank of Japan helped boost stocks.
The Nikkei 225 added 589.98 points or 7.74 per cent to finish at 8,211.90.
Strong rebounds in global stock markets after the US Federal Reserve slashed its key interest rate by another 0.5 percentage points to 1.0 per cent boosted oil prices, analysts said.
The Fed’s expected action came after China also chopped its benchmark one-year deposit rate by 27 basis points to 3.60 per cent in a bid to spur economic growth, and expectations rose for rate cuts in Japan and Europe.
Brent North Sea crude for December climbed US$2.03 to US$67.50 a barrel. It had soared US$5.18 to US$65.47 in London.
