Baku-APA. Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi urged Egyptian political groups to consolidate national unity, semi-official Fars news agency reported on Friday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The Iranian foreign minister made the remark in a telephone conversation with Egypt's Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr on Thursday.

"Egypt's fate should be determined by its own nation and any decision made by the Egyptian people should be respected by all," Salehi was quoted as saying.

The Iranian foreign minister called on all Egyptian political groups and elite to join hands and consolidate national unity as soon as possible.

"The Islamic republic has always sought and will seek the best relations with Egypt," he added.

The Egyptian minister called for the enhancement of ties with Iran, voicing hope that his contacts with his Iranian counterpart would continue.

Thousands of protesters, mostly Islamists, gathered Friday at Rabia al-Adawiya Square in Cairo's Nasr City, demanding the " return" of ousted President Mohamed Morsi.

Morsi was toppled last week in response to millions of protesters who demanded his removal due to his "maladministration" since he came to power a year ago. However, his supporters vowed to sacrifice for Morsi's return.
