Several Baku-Nakhchivan flights scheduled for July 6 have been delayed due to thunderstorm activity, Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) told APA-Economics.
According to the airline, flights will resume once weather conditions stabilize. Passengers will be informed in detail about any possible changes.
It was noted that due to the geographical location and mountainous terrain of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, meteorological conditions observed in the region can directly affect flight operations.
"Strong winds, sudden changes in wind direction, and lightning activity, in particular, create additional risks during the takeoff and landing phases.
It is important to note that the decision to delay or cancel flights due to weather conditions is not made solely based on the weather observed by passengers at the airport. In aviation, decisions are made based on the current and forecast meteorological conditions along the route and at the departure and arrival airports. For example, lightning activity, strong winds, vertical air currents, heavy precipitation, low visibility, or storm clouds may not be clearly visible from ground level. However, since these meteorological conditions can seriously affect flight safety, flight crews and operational services make the relevant decisions in accordance with international aviation safety standards."
