Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has met with the newly appointed United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Dmitry Shlapachenko, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told APA.
During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on the current agenda of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN, prospects for the partnership, as well as regional and international security issues.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that the long-standing and productive cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN has been developing successfully across various areas. It was stated that next year will mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN, and that this milestone creates important opportunities for further strengthening the partnership.
The sides emphasized Azerbaijan's active role in contributing to addressing global challenges, noting that the country has successfully hosted a number of major international events in recent years. They highlighted that the high-level organization of COP29 and the World Urban Forum demonstrated Azerbaijan's commitment to multilateral cooperation. In this context, they noted that the signing of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2026–2030 has opened a new stage in cooperation with the UN system. It was also stressed that Azerbaijan will continue to host a number of internationally significant events in the future.
The meeting also addressed Azerbaijan's role as a reliable bridge between Europe and Asia, projects aimed at expanding transport and communication links, the growing importance of the Middle Corridor, the development of cooperation with Central Asian countries, and new opportunities created within the framework of the C6 cooperation format.
Touching upon regional security issues, the minister provided information on the post-conflict realities in the region, large-scale reconstruction and restoration efforts in the liberated territories, and measures being taken to ensure the safe and dignified return of former internally displaced persons to their native lands.
Speaking about the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process, the minister stressed the importance of making use of the existing opportunities to achieve sustainable peace.
Minister Bayramov wished Dmitry Shlapachenko success in his new role. The UN's new Resident Coordinator expressed his satisfaction with serving in Azerbaijan and stated that the UN is interested in further developing cooperation with the country across all areas and strengthening the partnership in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.
The sides also exchanged views on other bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.
