July 6 marks the 100th anniversary of the commissioning of the Baku–Sabunchu–Surakhani railway line, which became the first electrified railway in Azerbaijan and the former USSR, Azerbaijan Railways CJSC told APA.
According to the company, the Baku–Sabunchu electrified railway station, built during that period, became one of the country's key transport hubs.
"Thousands of passengers, including oil workers and industrial employees, traveled faster and more comfortably to suburban settlements around Baku and other regions via the electrified Baku–Sabunchu–Surakhani railway.
The rich legacy of a century continues today through more modern and sustainable railway lines and is being carried into the future," the statement said.
