Former Georgian Defense Minister Bacho Akhalaia has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison, APA's local bureau reports.

The verdict was announced by the Tbilisi City Court.

The former minister was accused of calling for the violent overthrow of the constitutional order and the government in Georgia.

Bacho Akhalaia did not attend the announcement of the verdict and therefore did not have the right to make a final statement.

Note that Bacho Akhalaia was detained in December last year in connection with the October 4 case involving the storming of the Georgian president's palace in Tbilisi. The new charge against the former minister was brought after he stated during a court hearing in the case: "We will overthrow Bidzina Ivanishvili and his government, we will definitely overthrow them."

Recall that Bacho Akhalaia served as Georgia's defense minister from 2009 to 2012. He was arrested in November 2012 in connection with the death of retired Colonel Sergo Tetradze, sentenced to nine years in prison in 2018, and released in March 2022.
