US President Donald Trump said he spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and asked him to reconsider the decision regarding footballer Folarin Balogun, BBC reports.
Speaking at the White House, Trump said he viewed FIFA's decision to suspend the enforcement of Balogun's punishment as the right one.
He added that if the punishment had been enforced, it would have become "a major stain" on the tournament.
"I don't think it was a violation of the rules. I can't tell them what to do. The only thing I did was ask for the decision to be reconsidered. It was the committee that made the decision, and it was the right decision," Trump said.
It should be noted that UEFA issued a statement condemning FIFA's decision regarding Folarin Balogun.
As previously reported, Balogun was shown a red card for serious foul play during the Round of 16 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Under the rules, he was supposed to miss the Round of 16 match against Belgium. However, FIFA suspended the US forward's disqualification on probation for one year and allowed Balogun to play against Belgium. US President Donald Trump thanked FIFA for its decision to lift Balogun's punishment.
