Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has denied US President Donald Trump's statement that the parties are close to reaching an agreement and that negotiations will begin today, APA's Tehran bureau reports.
Baghaei said that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is traveling to Iraq today to participate in the Arbaeen pilgrimage ceremony and that the visit is of a personal nature.
According to him, the other members of Iran's negotiating team are inside the country.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson stressed that the discussions between Iran and Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz are bilateral talks between the two Gulf littoral states.
Baghaei noted that the purpose of the talks with Oman is to ensure a safe shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.
He added that other countries can play either a constructive or a destructive role in this negotiation process.
