An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck Japan's central region, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), APA reports.
The quake was recorded at a depth of 77.6 kilometers at 2:00 am local time on Sunday. Its epicenter was registered 23 kilometers north-northeast of the Japanese city of Matsudo in the Chiba Prefecture, which has a population of over 470,000, and less than 70 kilometers northeast of Japan's capital city of Tokyo.
According to Japan Times, lower-intensity shaking was reported in parts of Tokyo as well as Ibaraki, Saitama and Chiba prefectures. There were no initial reports of casualties or material damage following the quake.
