The Canadian government announced on Tuesday a new set of tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% on approximately $20 billion of United States products, effective September 8, in response to an additional 50% levy on various Canadian goods, APA reports.

"They asked too much from Canada, and offered very little in return," Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said at a press conference in Ottawa. He explained that the tariffs will match those of the US "dollar for dollar, rate for rate."

Ottawa imposed a 50% levy on steel, up double from the earlier 25%. It also introduced measures against dairy, appliances, farm equipment, furniture, pulp and paper, among other products. The government also announced an assistance package for Canadian workers worth 7.5 billion Canadian dollars ($5.4 billion).
