Baku. Victoria Dementyeva – APA. “The violation of the balance of forces in the Caspian region will reduce the level of security in the region,” said Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Minister, Igor Bratchikov in his interview with RIA Novosti. Commenting on the statements that the U.S. is interested in the Caspian region, Bratchikov noted that at present, there is a certain balance in the region: “Deliberate exaggeration of this balance will lead to the violation of stability, increase conflict potential, reduce security level. I’m sure that none of the Caspian littoral countries are interested in it.”

Estimating the course of the work on the Draft Convention regarding the legal status of Caspian Sea, Igor Bratchikov said he doubts that the document that has been developed for 17 years will be adopted at the summit of the heads of state of the Caspian countries in Astrakhan next year. But he stressed that this summit could determine the principles on the management of the sea. The diplomat also said the presidents could also reach a final agreement on the delimitation of the water area of the Caspian Sea.

Special representative of the Russian President on demarcation and delimitation of state borders Igor Bratchikov spoke about Trans-Caspian gas pipeline and its possible impact on the Caspian Sea. He noted that implementation of this project can cause accidents that will affect the ecology of the entire region: “If for a second we turn a blind eye to this negligent behavior of our European colleagues who tries to connect Turkmenbashi and Baku with the gas pipeline, which is an intervention in internal issues on the Caspian Sea, and disregard environmental factors, it can be a foolish and fatal error.”

Bratchikov said that not only Russian but also international experts wrote about complicated seismological situation in the potential area of Trans-Caspian gas pipeline: “Results of any accident can be a disaster for the very sensitive ecosystem of the Caspian Sea.”

The diplomat said that not the Europeans actively lobbying the construction of the pipeline, but the coastal states should eliminate the consequences in case of an accident
