She made the remarks at the event on “The role of traditions in family formation” held at the parliament on Wednesday.
Unregistered marriage cases are mostly observed in Azerbaijan’s districts and villages, according to the ombudsman. “Some girls are forced into a marriage that leads to serious problems. All this impedes the family formation,” she added.
Suleymanova noted that drug addiction and gambling are one of the reasons for family dissolution in Azerbaijan. “We have recently received appeals that in Azerbaijan there are some fathers who lose their daughters in gambling.”
The ombudsman also expressed her concern over a large number of brothels in Azerbaijan. “This factor also plays a special role in family dissolution. Girls are mainly facing discrimination in the family. Families often choose to abort a female fetus. Statistics show that baby girls make up 46% and baby boys - 54% of newborns in the world, causing great demographic changes.
