The exploration of the site has revealed that the landslide occurred at the entrance of the Sersura village, on a mountain slope on the right bank of the River Sulut, the expedition’s chief geologist, Alamdar Piriyev, told APA.
According to him, the landslide area is 750-800 meters in length and 350-400 meters in width.
“The landslide has occurred in a stairs-like pattern and split into two blocs of varying height. On the area slid, cracks 20 to 75 meters in length and 12 to 140 meters in width have been discovered. Hypsometrically, these cracks are filled with water at the bottom of the slide. As a result of underground and surface water, small-size ponds have emerged within the cracks on the highway. The landslide has been caused by the heavy rainfall during the last ten days of May,” Piriyev said.
He added that 350-400 meters of the road has become useless after landslide.
“Traffic movement on the highway connecting Ismayilli’s Sulut, Kalazeyve and Sarsua villages with the district center is stopped. At the same time, the exploration made it clear that the 10,000 kW electric poles on the right side of the road in Sulut, Kalazeyve, Sarsura villages as well as Aghsu’s Kalva, Khatman, Nuran, Dilman, Hajman and Surakhani villages have bended. Currently, the landslide process is in active phase. Any interference in the landslide may turn the process more active,” the chief geologist said.
Piriyev also noted that though cracks 1-1.2 cm in width and 4-5 meters in length have emerged near the houses between slid area and Sarsura village, these houses are 450-500 meters from the landslide zone and there is no threat to them.
“Concerned bodies are taking necessary measures to repair the road,” he concluded.
