Baku. Mubariz Aslanov – APA. UNICEF’s Baku office has put forward a proposal before the Azerbaijani parliament as to lowering the maximum penalty term for teenagers to 8 years and raising the age limit from 18 to 20 for detention at Reforming Facility of the Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Service.
At Thursday’s event dedicated to the theme “Improving the law on trial of teenagers” at the parliament, head of UNICEF’s Baku office Andro Shilakadze said they have concrete proposal regarding the rights of teenagers.
He noted that among these proposal is the reduction of the 10-year prison term for teenagers.
“It’s six years in Europe. Successful steps have been taken in Azerbaijan towards human rights as well as protection of children’s rights and improvement of the relevant law. Hope this proposal will follow that and will produce successful results in reforming children,” he said.
Chairman of the Legal Policy and State Building Ali Huseynli welcomed the proposals, excluding that whether raising the age limit for detention from 18 to 20 is a right decision or not is a controversial issue.
