The Ombudsman Office has responded to allegations circulating regarding the protection of the rights of certain persons of Armenian origin who were sentenced to imprisonment after being found guilty by a court of committing crimes against peace and humanity, war crimes, terrorism, financing terrorism, and other serious crimes, the Ombudsman Office's Press Service told APA.
It was reported that, within the framework of the Ombudsman's activities under the National Preventive Mechanism, meetings have been held with these individuals, including Ruben Vardanyan, both during the preliminary investigation and court proceedings and after their conviction in penitentiary institutions. The state of protection of their rights, detention conditions, and treatment have been continuously monitored.
It was noted that the monitoring activities were carried out in accordance with international standards. During the visits, these individuals, including Ruben Vardanyan, were informed of their rights in their native languages, their health was examined by a physician member of the National Preventive Group, and various publications, legislative acts, and works of fiction were provided to them in accordance with their requests.
According to the information, the prisoners have the opportunity to contact the Ombudsman's 916 Call Center, and the appeals received have been reviewed in accordance with the legislation.
The Ombudsman Office noted that conditions in the institutions where these individuals are held meet modern standards and that no discrimination is permitted against them. Their rights to engage in sports, take walks, organize their leisure time, obtain information, and maintain telephone contact with family members are ensured.
It was reported that although they had no funds in their accounts when they were transferred to penitentiary institutions, their telephone conversations with family members and other opportunities were not restricted.
It was also noted that the prisoners' requests regarding notarial and medical services have been fulfilled in accordance with the legislation. Most recently, Araik Harutyunyan's request for notarial services was fulfilled, and the process was observed on-site by members of the Ombudsman's National Preventive Group.
The statement emphasized that the individuals' requests for additional medical examinations and additional telephone conversations with family members, as well as appeals submitted to state institutions by the individuals themselves and their lawyers, have been fulfilled.
Based on the results of monitoring activities and visits, the Ombudsman Office stated that the rights of individuals sentenced to imprisonment after being found guilty by a court of committing serious crimes are ensured without any discrimination.
It was noted that the allegations published on websites on behalf of these individuals are groundless, do not reflect reality, and serve biased political purposes.
