Navanethem (Navi) Pillay was born on September 23, 1941, in Durban, South Africa, into a family of Indian origin. She is a prominent lawyer and former judge in the fields of international law and human rights. She studied law at the University of Natal and later earned master's and doctoral degrees at Harvard University. During the apartheid era, she fought against racial discrimination and defended the rights of political prisoners. In 1995, she was appointed a judge of the High Court of South Africa by Nelson Mandela. From 1999 to 2003, she served as president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and from 2003 to 2008, she was a judge of the International Criminal Court. From 2008 to 2014, she served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. She also chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and paid particular attention in her work to upholding international law and protecting human rights.
