The ratification of the Makkah Convention must be accelerated, Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said at the third high-level meeting of the heads of anti-corruption law enforcement agencies of OIC member states in Baku, APA reports.
He stated that the approval of the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Convention on Cooperation among Law Enforcement Authorities of OIC Member States in Combating Corruption at the first Ministerial Meeting held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in December 2021 was an important collective step. This step paved the way for the final adoption of the document by the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers.
He noted that the ratification of at least 19 member states is required for the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Convention to enter into force. Stating that seven ratifications have already been secured, the Secretary-General called on states that have not yet signed or ratified the Convention to complete this process as soon as possible.
The Secretary-General also emphasized the importance of continuing cooperation with the United Nations and other relevant international organizations.
Finally, the OIC Secretary-General expressed his gratitude to the Republic of Azerbaijan for hosting the third Ministerial Meeting and for its hospitality. He expressed confidence that the decisions to be adopted at the meeting would strengthen joint capacities for preventing and combating corruption, as well as give impetus to the practical implementation of the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Convention.
