"According to the World Meteorological Organization, if current climate policies continue, global warming is expected to reach 2.8 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels," Khurshid Rustamov, Economic Affairs Adviser at the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, said during his presentation on "Towards NDC 3.0: Global Climate Action" at the 9th Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Dialogue, APA-Economics reports.

According to him, if the new NDCs adopted by 155 countries are fully implemented, the world will achieve emissions reductions and limit global warming to 2.3–2.5 degrees Celsius.

"However, this is not sufficient to achieve the goal of the Paris Agreement, as the Agreement aims to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. There are two main gaps here: the ambition gap and the implementation gap. The ambition gap means that the targets set under the NDCs are insufficient to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. The implementation gap means that the policies implemented to achieve the targets are insufficient. So, what do the 2035 emissions projections tell us? The current level of NDCs is expected to reduce emissions by 12% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. For the 2 degrees Celsius pathway, which is another target of the Paris Agreement, we must reduce emissions by 35% by 2035 compared to 2019 levels. For the 1.5 degrees Celsius pathway, emissions must be reduced by 55%. The gap is quite significant, and that is precisely why UN agencies are making a strong appeal to countries to increase their ambitions in their NDCs."
