When discussing the decarbonization of Azerbaijan's energy sector, we must first take into account the country's economic realities, MP Nigar Arpadarai said during her speech at the 9th Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Dialogue, APA-Economics reports.

"Azerbaijan's oil and gas industry is not only part of our economic history, but this sector has also played an important role in shaping our country's industrial potential, energy infrastructure, engineering expertise, and international economic relations. We must move toward a new energy phase without denying this legacy, but rather by using the knowledge, experience, and opportunities it has created. In this regard, decarbonization should not be understood as abandoning the traditional energy sector, but rather as transforming it into a more efficient, technologically advanced, and sustainable model," she noted.

According to her, several areas are of particular importance in this regard:

"The development of renewable energy sources and diversification of electricity generation, as well as the decarbonization of the oil and gas sector itself, are of great importance here, and SOCAR's role in this context should be particularly emphasized. The third area, of course, is improving energy efficiency. Sometimes we present the energy transition only as the construction of new power plants and the expansion of renewable energy capacity. However, the more efficient use of energy during consumption, in buildings, transport, and industrial processes, is equally important."
