According to the statement of the State Commission of Azerbaijan for Prisoners, Hostages, and Missing Citizens, as of December 1, 2020, 3,890 people are listed as missing; to date, information about 872 persons has been received, Azerbaijani Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) Sabina Aliyeva said in a report on “Hate crimes and hate speech against Azerbaijanis", APA reports.
The report notes that during the First Garabagh war period, the statements and journalist interviews of people captured and returned by the armed forces of Armenia reveal the presence of various types of crimes:
"Hundreds of Azerbaijanis were condemned to lifelong disabilities due to the physical and psychological oppression they have experienced during captivity. During the occupation of the Kalbajar district (02.04.1993), the Armenian-origin doctor Aida Serobyan, who was "supervising" the Azerbaijanis who were taken hostage, administered injections of unknown composition into Arzu Hajiyev, born on 03.31.1993, causing the child to become disabled for life. Arzu Hajiyev died in 2003.
As one of the many tortures applied to the prisoners of war, it was discovered that Murshudov Sadraddin Aslan was forced to swallow broken glass after being beaten. In addition, as a result of the medical examinations conducted after the exchange of the corpses between the sides, it was confirmed that acts of torture and humiliation were conducted on the lifeless bodies before and after their death."
