“We had information that during the occupation period Armenians carried out illegal excavations in various places of Karabakh and information was provided to the relevant bodies in this regard. Even some years ago, Armenian “archeologist” Nizde Yeranyan appealed to make a report about the mounds they excavated in Karabakh at the conference held in Italy’s Florence. However, with the timely intervention of our archaeologists, that report was not included in the program of the conference. There are such facts and currently during the monitoring of the monuments importance is attached to the registration of these facts,” Director General of the Institute of Archeology, Ethnography and Anthropology of ANAS, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Abbas Seyidov said in his interview with APA.
“During the occupation period, as they also accepted it, they conducted archeological excavation works in Azykh cave together with “scientists” of foreign countries. At that time Azykh cave subjected do destruction,” he noted.
According to him, in order to destroy the cultural layer, they even exploded grenade inside the cave: “A book on fake excavations implemented there was published in 2016. This book was also an excerpt from the sources reflecting the excavations carried out by Azerbaijani scientists. We want to publish a new book by conducting research with new methods in the Azykh cave. This book will be published in several languages. We plan to involve the world’s prominent researchers to this research. Correspondence is already underway with prominent scientists. The presidium of ANAS and relevant agencies were informed in this regard. The institute's work plan on Karabakh envisages archeological excavations at the most magnificent monuments.”
